These exemption procedures apply to all courses. A student exam exemption is based on the

criteria of absences, discipline, and grades as outlined below:

Qualified Class exemptions are as follows:

FRESHMEN Two final exam exemptions - both semesters

SOPHOMORE Two final exam exemptions - both semesters

JUNIOR Three final exam exemptions - both semesters

SENIOR Three final exam exemptions - both semesters

Absence:

● Students must have five or fewer absences (excused only).

● In-house counts as an excused absence.

● School activities or trips do not count as an absence.

● Some absences may be excused by the building principal or his/her designee.

● The number of absences from each individual class (not total days absent) and the grade

from that particular class is used to determine the student’s eligibility. A student may be

exempt from one exam, but required to take another.

Discipline:

● If a student receives any type of out-of-school suspension, he/she is required to take

final exams.

Grades:

● Each exam exemption is determined per class. In order to qualify for an exemption, a

student must have a grade of “B” or better as his/her final grade for both quarters.

● Semester grades will be calculated as base upon final exam exemption as follows:

○ If a student has a grade of “A” for one quarter and a grade of “B” for the other

quarter, and chooses not to take the exam, the lower of the two grades will be

given as the semester grade.

○ If a student has a grade of “A” for one quarter and a grade of “B” for the other

quarter, and elects to take the exam, the semester grade will be based on the use

of all three grades, according to the current grading system.

○ Students who meet the exam exemption criteria can always choose to take a final

exam to attempt to improve the course grade.

○ If an exempt student has an “A” for one quarter and a “B” for the other quarter,

and elects to take the exam, the semester grade can be no lower than a “B”.

Students must return the signed final exam exemption form, signed by his/her parents by the

due date, or forfeit the opportunity to waive
